Net Metering Guide
WBSEDCL Net Metering — Step-by-Step for Rooftop Solar
How grid-connected rooftop solar billing works in West Bengal, and the complete journey from application to a running net-metered plant — explained in plain language by a WBSEDCL enlisted solar vendor.
The Basics
How Net Metering Works
Your solar plant generates electricity during the day — your home or business uses it first.
Any surplus flows into the WBSEDCL grid through a bi-directional (net) meter, earning export credits.
At night or during low generation, you draw power from the grid as usual.
Your bill is calculated on the net of imports minus exports — you pay mainly for the difference.
The Process
Six Steps to a Net-Metered Plant
- 01
Application & Feasibility
A net-metering application is submitted to WBSEDCL with your consumer details and proposed plant capacity for technical feasibility.
- 02
Technical Sanction
WBSEDCL reviews the application and issues feasibility/technical sanction for the approved capacity at your premises.
- 03
Solar Plant Installation
The rooftop or ground-mounted plant is installed as per the sanctioned capacity and applicable technical standards.
- 04
Pre-Commissioning Testing
String, inverter and protection systems are tested; required documents and test reports are prepared for inspection.
- 05
Net Meter Installation & Testing
WBSEDCL installs and tests the bi-directional meter that records both imported and exported units.
- 06
Synchronization & Commissioning
The plant is synchronized with the grid, commissioning is recorded, and your billing shifts to net-metering.
Documents Typically Needed
- Latest WBSEDCL electricity bill (consumer number)
- Applicant identity and address proof
- Site/roof details and proposed system capacity
- Module and inverter specifications with required test certificates
